- Flat head screwdriver
- Masking tape
- Pencil
Step by Step Guide to Install Bathroom Accessories
In this instance, we are fitting a new towel ring in the bathroom. However, the same principles apply no matter what accessory you are fitting. The following steps are based on a plasterboard tiled wall.
Step 1
Choose where you are going to place your towel ring on the wall. Mark your holes with a pencil and cover them with masking tape. Re-mark the holes again on the tape. The masking tape will prevent the drill bit from slipping and damaging the tile.
Step 2
Use the multi-purpose detector to make sure there are no wires or pipes where you are going to drill.
Step 3
Make sure the drill is not set to hammer action as this will crack your tile and damage the plasterboard backing. Drill the holes using the tile bit on your drill.
Top Tip: Let the drill do the work. Hold the drill perpendicular to the tile and apply a bit of pressure. Go slow until you break the surface of the tile. Once you are through the surface, you can increase the speed of the drill.
Step 4
Fit the plasterboard fixings into your holes, ideally past the depth of the tile. Then, screw your bracket into the fixings.
Step 5
Fix the escutcheon on the bracket and secure it by screwing it on using a flat head screwdriver.
Now your new towel ring is installed and ready to hang up those fancy towels!
Note: On a solid tiled wall
Drill your holes with a tile drill bit until you are past the depth of the tile. Make sure the drill is not set to hammer action as this will crack your tile. Then continue to drill into the masonry wall using a masonry bit with hammer action. Remember, safety first- always wear safety goggles when drilling.
