Tools for the Job
Prepping Your Metal Gate
Before you get started on painting your gate, it’s important to prepare the gate first. Follow the step-by-step guide below to prep your gate:
- For a smooth final finish, it’s important to scrape any loose paint or rust off the gate using a stiff bristled wire brush.
- Pop on a pair of disposable gloves and spread a dust sheet under the gate to protect the ground surrounding it.
- Degrease and clean the gates using white spirits.
- Allow them to dry.
Painting Your Metal Gate
Now that you’ve prepped your gate, it’s time to get painting! Follow the steps below to start:
- Apply a primer. Certain bare metal surfaces like zinc, aluminium and galvanized may need a special primer first, so always read instructions carefully.
- Cover the gates completely with the metal paint.
- Make sure to work into any intricate decorative areas.
- On previously painted gates, in sound condition, one coat should be sufficient. On bare or rusty gates, two coats may be required.
- Don't over apply or sagging will occur.
- Leave to dry.
Top tip: A metal care paint like Hammerite can be applied directly onto the gate without using a primer first. You can also paint it directly onto rusty surfaces too.
